The Highlights of Flock Fiber Festival

In a nutshell, my favorite fiber festival nationwide - from a vendor's perspective anyway. I hear from many attendees that they feel the same way due to the beautiful space (Seattle Convention Center - Summit), fabulous vendors, and happy, enthusiastic community.

I've been vending at Flock since its first year in 2023, that was actually my first time vending at any festival... thousands of miles from home! In the last few years I've figured out what works best for us in terms of booth size, what to bring, and how to ship it on pallets across the country.

We love to bring a mix of things to the festival: a collection of hand dyed yarn colorways on a few different popular bases (this year we debuted our 90s Collection at Flock), our entire Home yarn line, and an archive of colorways from past collections. This approach offers something for everyone and is a really great way to present our products and styles to customers who have never shopped with us before!

When you're a vendor with a big event like Flock, the organization of the event (or lack thereof) really impacts your experience. It affects whether you can show up for your guests with enthusiasm and excitement or if you've been pulling your hair out for days/weeks/months and just need to get through it. I've experienced both sorts of events and I'm happy to report that every year of Flock has been a vendor's dream! Prompt and thorough communication, shipping support, and an organizer who really cares about each individual vendor's success.

This year was one of the first times I had the time to walk around the festival and shop some of my favorite vendors. I snagged hand painted stitch markers, project bags, hand stitch sequin patches, stickers, quilted pouches, and more goodies. It felt so fun to be an attendee and a fan for a few minutes!

Knitting the Flock Vest by Andrea Mowry

This project was a highlight of the trip! I saw so many gorgeous finished Flock Vests around the festival on Saturday and it did a lot to foster community and belonging. It was an instant talking point among attendees and broke the ice for many of us who are self-proclaimed introverts.

What I loved most, however, was working on this project leading up to the festival. I started it in the late spring/early summer with Andrea Mowry's Knit-a-Long and felt like it built so much excitement and anticipation of the festival. Though I had a lot to prepare during that time as a vendor, working on this project also reminded me that I am just a knitter at heart and I belong to a lovely community of crafters.

Yarn choice & colorways

I chose to use my own Home yarn line for this pattern in the colorways Dinner Party, Betty, and Love Letter. Though this yarn is labeled as a DK weight, it works well for patterns written for worsted weight yarn too. It has 212 yds per 100g skein which was right in line with the yarn Andrea Mowry used for her Flock Vest Design. The gauge, fit, drape, and colors came out exactly as I imagined and I could not be more thrilled with the outcome!

Flock Fiber Festival FAQ

What yarn is best for the Flock Vest pattern?

Any comparable worsted or DK weight yarn will do but I am (of course) partial to my own Home yarn, the colors were intentionally designed to be mix and matchable among the 20 solid colorways so there isn't a trio of colorways that won't look fantastic!

Will Sewrella Yarn be vending at Flock again next year?

I plan to! I've enjoyed vending for four consecutive years now and my trip to Seattle every August is a highlight of my Summer.
